I came across this video of Louie playing "Skin Deep". (viewed best on fullscreen.)
It's the clearest, most detailed videography of Louie I've ever seen!
This is from Pete York's "Super Drumming" series Volume 1, 1987/88.
Pharrell William's "Happy" is the highest-charting Oscar-nominated song performed at the Academy Awards program March 2.
Watch here as one of Mrs. B’s DrumMoms presents her 4-yr old son Andre' deftly covering the tune.
Mrs. B: "Well, it certainly made me happy!"

We were informed today that world-class bass trombonist Mike Wimberly passed away Nov. 21, 2012. A thirty-year veteran of the Louie Bellson Big Band, he played with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra and traveled on the road with Buddy Rich.
He recorded with Thelonius Monk and many other greats; was a member of the Della Reese Show band, and played in various all-star jazz orchestras over the years — at the Hollywood Bowl, the Grammies, etc.
Notes of remembrance may be written in the Guestbook.
Also, see Linda Neal's letter written in the Guestbook Feb 10.

Below are two of the many jazz compilation albums which include both Brubeck and Bellson.
The third album is The Sacred Music of Louie Bellson & the Jazz Ballet for which Brubeck wrote:
" Congratulations! Psalm 81 tells us to “make a joyful noise” and “bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery” and “blow trumpets.” You have done all of these with your great big band writing, your choral writing, and your drumming. And after the sacred music comes a ballet to make us dance for joy. "
A new portrait of Louie Bellson has been unveiled; this time by celebrated painter, Merryl Jaye.
Merryl began painting portraits of the jazz greats in 2005. Selected for their preeminence in their field, her subjects have been vividly rendered as she captures on canvas the emotion and spontaneity of jazz in live performance. For more, visit Merryl Jaye Studio.

THE CENTURY PROJECT
100 Years of American Music from behind the Drums
by Daniel Glass
". . . a brilliant, fascinating and inspiring film" --Zoro
"The Century Project" takes you on a thrilling journey through 100 years of music history, tracing the story of the drum set from its inception at the end of the Civil War (1865) to the dawn of the British Invasion (1965). Throughout the presentation, Daniel introduces and demonstrates a variety of classic styles and techniques, including double drumming, ragtime, New Orleans jazz, Chicago jazz, classic swing, bebop, rhythm and blues, rockabilly and early rock'n'roll. www.danielglass.com
It never ceases to amaze me who turns out to be a Louie Bellson fan.
At the Chicago Drum Show last year, I sold some Bellson artwork to attendee drummer Joel DeLorge. As you may know, “Gone But Not Forgotten” is an art print of four legendary drummers.
Recently, Joel emailed me that he’d given one of the prints to “great friend and fellow KISS and Alice Cooper drummer Eric Singer last week. Eric was a big fan of Louie, Buddy, Gene, and Chick. He also played with his father's society band while growing up ... I thought I'd share with you the photo taken of us backstage at the KISS concert last week showing off the great art piece.”
Back row: KISS Gene Simmons, Eric Singer, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer. Front row: Matt Csiszar, Joel DeLorge (holding framed art).
After getting permission to post this photo, Joel added that Eric, “told me he saw Louie in a drum clinic when he younger in 1972-73 in his hometown of Cleveland!”
You never know!

Dear Bellson Fans, Having facilitated 2 funerals, 1 memorial recital and 2 memorial concerts for Louie, as well as having survived Dee Dee's funeral, Mrs. B is exhausted! However, please stay tuned to the website's Schedule page for upcoming activities. _______________________________________________________________
Only 5 months following the death of Louie Bellson in February, we regret to announce the sudden passing of our daughter vocalist Dee Dee Bellson, at her home in Charlottesville, Virginia on July 4. She was 49. (Job 13:15) Dee Dee sang independently and, on occasion, with her father Louie Bellson's Big Band. She also sang backup with groups including the Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow and Sheena Easton. News of her step-daughter's death was a shocking blow to Mrs. Bellson who'd just completed holding the third Memorial Service for husband Louie in San Jose June 29. (See Home page). Flying to Virginia for the July 14 funeral, Mrs. B was comforted by the kindness and hospitality of Dee Dee's former band members and friends in Charlottesville. Afterwards, Mrs. B. traveled to Washington, D.C. to visit her own father who is recuperating well following his recent critical surgery. (Psalm 41:3) Condolences for Louie and/or Dee Dee may be written on the Guestbook page. To donate (tax-deductible) in memory of either Bellson, choose & write name on memo line of check. (see slides #1, 7, 11, 17) http://www.ascap.com/eventsawards/awards/jazzwall/2007/photos.html LETTER TO THE EDITOR, JazzTimes Magazine, Jan 23, 2007 Sent to: firstname.lastname@example.org That you failed to get the name of the album right was an oversight [“Highs & Lows,†Jan/Feb ‘07]. It’s Soul On Top which appeared in JT [“Reviews Vox,†Nov ‘04]. But not to have mentioned that evening’s reunion with Louie Bellson (whose orchestra had played the original 1970 album) was a gross omission. After Bellson’s guest performance, Brown graciously exhorted the audience to stand in homage to Bellson. It was truly an historic and unforgettable evening for all.
