We were informed today that world-class bass trombonist Mike Wimberly passed away Nov. 21, 2012.  A thirty-year veteran of the Louie Bellson Big Band, he played with the Gerald Wilson Orchestra and traveled on the road with Buddy Rich.

He recorded with Thelonius Monk and many other greats; was a member of the Della Reese Show band, and played in various all-star jazz orchestras over the years — at the Hollywood Bowl, the Grammies, etc.

Notes of remembrance may be written in the Guestbook.

Also, see Linda Neal's letter written in the Guestbook Feb 10.

The third album is The Sacred Music of Louie Bellson & the Jazz Ballet for which Brubeck wrote:

Congratulations!  Psalm 81 tells us to “make a joyful noise” and “bring hither the timbrel, the pleasant harp with the psaltery” and “blow trumpets.”  You have done all of these with your great big band writing, your choral writing, and your drumming.  And after the sacred music comes a ballet to make us dance for joy. "

Last night, Mrs. B attended a superb performance of The Clayton Brothers Quintet in Santa Clara, California.  It was a heartfelt reunion of mutual love and respect the brothers had for Louie Bellson.   After the show, the group unveiled their exciting new CD, The Gathering.

Or Mrs. B's Gift Shop - Order Form 10/12.

Recorded in 1984 for Pete Christlieb's Bosco label, this outing by the Louie Bellson Orchestra has plenty of power, more variety than usual, and swings up a storm; half of the selections actually feature a small group from the orchestra. The big band tracks have spots for trumpeters Conte Candoli and Ron King, trombonists Carl Fontana and Andy Martin, tenor great Christlieb and drummer Bellson (who is showcased on Thad Jones' "With Bells On"), while the combo tracks put the focus on trumpeters Conte Candoli and Steve Huffsteter, trombonist Fonanta (featured on "Indian Summer") and Christlieb. This is a rather obscure and hard-to-find release, but is worth the search, for the musicians sound consistently inspired. ~ Scott Yanow

See more via the link, but to start:
"The second best thing about this week's NYFF screening of The Savoy King: Chick Webb and the Music that Changed America might have been the audience -- a fire-hazard crowd of friends, family and jazz enthusiasts ready to laugh, hoot, and more than once, sing along to the music. But the first best thing was 92-year-old Norma Miller, a delightful presence both on film and live on-stage, where she joined director Jeff Kaufman for a lively but all-too brief Q&A."

THE CENTURY PROJECT

100 Years of American Music from behind the Drums

by Daniel Glass

Take a minute: watch the stunning New Trailer .

". . . a brilliant, fascinating and inspiring film"  --Zoro

"The Century Project" takes you on a thrilling journey through 100 years of music history, tracing the story of the drum set from its inception at the end of the Civil War (1865) to the dawn of the British Invasion (1965). Throughout the presentation, Daniel introduces and demonstrates a variety of classic styles and techniques, including double drumming, ragtime, New Orleans jazz, Chicago jazz, classic swing, bebop, rhythm and blues, rockabilly and early rock'n'roll.        www.danielglass.com

It never ceases to amaze me who turns out to be a Louie Bellson fan.

At the Chicago Drum Show last year, I sold some Bellson artwork to attendee drummer Joel DeLorge.  As you may know, “Gone But Not Forgotten” is an art print of four legendary drummers.

Recently, Joel emailed me that he’d given one of the prints to “great friend and fellow KISS and Alice Cooper drummer Eric Singer last week.  Eric was a big fan of Louie, Buddy, Gene, and Chick.  He also played with his father's society band while growing up ...  I thought I'd share with you the photo taken of us backstage at the KISS concert last week showing off the great art piece.”

Back row: KISS Gene Simmons, Eric Singer, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer.  Front row: Matt Csiszar, Joel DeLorge (holding framed art).

After getting permission to post this photo, Joel added that Eric, “told me he saw Louie in a drum clinic when he younger in 1972-73 in his hometown of Cleveland!”

You never know!

One of Bellson's dearest colleagues, Jack J. He composed several classical works and collaborated with jazz drummer Louis Bellson on numerous jazz and orchestral pieces. Orchestrator Hayes worked on 'The Color Purple,' 'Star Trek'. "The Magnificent Seven" and "To Kill a Mockingbird" for Bernstein, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" and "Days of Wine and Roses" for Mancini, "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and "Airport" for Alfred Newman, "In Cold Blood" for Jones, and "Casino Royale" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" for Bacharach. Hayes also composed TV scores, including such Westerns as "Riverboat," "Wagon Train," "The Virginian" and "Gunsmoke." Click here for full article in Variety. Only 5 months following the death of Louie Bellson in February, we regret to announce the sudden passing of our daughter vocalist Dee Dee Bellson, at her home in Charlottesville, Virginia on July 4. She was 49. (Job 13:15) Dee Dee sang independently and, on occasion, with her father Louie Bellson's Big Band. She also sang backup with groups including the Rolling Stones, Sheryl Crow and Sheena Easton. News of her step-daughter's death was a shocking blow to Mrs. Bellson who'd just completed holding the third Memorial Service for husband Louie in San Jose June 29. (See Home page). Flying to Virginia for the July 14 funeral, Mrs. B was comforted by the kindness and hospitality of Dee Dee's former band members and friends in Charlottesville. Afterwards, Mrs. B. traveled to Washington, D.C. to visit her own father who is recuperating well following his recent critical surgery. (Psalm 41:3) Condolences for Louie and/or Dee Dee may be written on the Guestbook page. To donate (tax-deductible) in memory of either Bellson, choose & write name on memo line of check. Launching into a refreshingly original version of Billy Strayhorn’s “Take the ‘A’ Train,” … Shaughnessy’s enthusiasm for the music and his affection for lost comrade Bellson made his set a touching celebration of the music’s immortality." Mrs. B has returned to L.A. from funeralizing and burying her husband in Moline, Illinois, his boyhood home in a plot located next to his father. It was a spiritual “homegoing” with ministerial testimony, music, video and eulogy. Thanks to Bellson’s service as a veteran of WWII, the ceremony was completed at the cemetery with drumroll, taps and a 21-gun salute. (Thank you American Legion!) The next memorial program will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church in San Jose, Calif. where he was baptized and married. (date TBA) Mrs. B thanks the multitude of attendees at both the Calif. and Ill. funerals, as well as the hundreds of cards, letters and emails of condolence. And now that she’s back, your Guestbook entries will be posted daily until catch up (earliest first). Those of you who’ve sent monetary contributions or flowers will be acknowledged by letter soon. To review, you may choose donating to Bellson’s church “Emmanuel Baptist Church” (tax-deductible) or to “Francine Bellson” to help defray expenses. Mail to:

Read this piece about how the Kennedy Center Honors Award seems to avoid jazz legends. (click) http://www.jazzwax.com/2008/12/the-kennedy-cen.html Remember point #1 in our Dec 5 News entry below? "1. Direct some young person you know to this website so they can learn about a real American Legend." Well, according to this article, they'll never learn it from the Kennedy Center (tribute program that's aired on national television over the holidays)! _______________________________________________________________
Early Dec, Mr. Bellson was discharged from the Hospital and transferred to a Rehabilitation Facility in the L.A. area. (Hallelujah!) He has begun a rigorous regimen of physical therapy to get him walking again on that fractured/repaired hip. As you would expect, he remains highly motivated. There is no phone in the room, and even if there were, you can imagine the adverse effect of numerous phonecalls on him and other patients. So we do truly thank the vast majority of you who are respecting his privacy (thus aiding his convalescence) by responding to our request to sign the Guestbook (which can be batch-printed and presented to him periodically). Also, we love receiving the greeting cards arriving (via Remo, Inc.) . . . Keep ‘em coming! _______________________________________________________________
Mrs. B has received hundreds of communications asking “if there’s anything I can do …” Well, in a word . . . . YES! Another outstanding press review (our 31st!) of "Louie & Clark Expedition 2" in prestigious Cadence Magazine. (Not online; shown here in its entirety.) "...might have been a rather tired run-through of big-band clichés by two octogenarians, its appeal a matter of sentimentality and nostalgia, but it is much more. Bellson’s compositions are often moving (in every sense of the word), and the soloists play beautifully: trumpeter Gut, tenorist Guerra, pianist Sung, bassist McLaurine, trombonist Hunter. The sections sound expertly rehearsed, and the band rocks and shouts. Both Bellson and Terry are wily masters—knowing what to do, how, and when, and the results are gratifying Jazz. Listen to “Davenport Blues” (not Bix’s, but Bellson’s) and “Well Alright Then” for swinging proof. Here’s to this brave, cheerful expedition!"
